Decisions, decisions, decisions...
ARGH First Beardfrog, then Samus Zero Suit, and I have the Third Strike soundtrack going off, this is just too much hype! I can't even type T_T...
Anyways aside from the really awesome character reveals, from my impressions of this Direct they certainly seem to have a focus on the more competitive side of things. They have an entire online playlist dedicated to 1v1 matches, no items and the like. All stages have a Final Destination Form. From what I've seen of the gameplay it seems to be a mixture of Melee and Brawl as they said though MUCH faster than Brawl. All character seem to have many pros and cons to using them giving it a rather Marvel vs Capcom-y feel to be sure. Not to mention the custom movesets that may or may not be allowed during tourneys but it looks like it will add a distinct fresh feel to the series...or break it entirely! Who knows? Maybe Mahvel won't be the only one bringing the hype this time around! We can only pray that the online is pretty decent though. It seems like the game will be plenty of fun offline but given that they have such a strong focus this time on competitive Smash players who knows? Let's just get Iron Galaxy and GGPO for all fighting games and their netcodes pls...
On the more casual side, we have soooo many items this time around some really cool ones like the MasterBall containing rares and legendaries. Several gadgets from the Zelda series. JUST A WHOLE BUNCH OKAY. Ahem, they even have boss characters like the Yellow Devil being featured on certain stages that will harass the players as they fight. Ridley seems to have been given this treatment as well! It's hinted that there are going to be even more that we've yet to uncover. There was this interesting mode exclusive to the 3Ds version where 4 people will compete against each other in Metroidvania type field and they have to defeat enemies to gain power ups that will increase their defense, offense, speed etc. for a total of five minutes after the five minutes are over it's time to duke it out with your uniquely buffed characters. Seems like a fun distraction and may have influenced me to definitely check out the 3DS version.
Here's a list of maps we've seen so far...
3DS version
- Reset Bomb Forest
- 3D Land (Super Mario 3D Land)
- Spirit Train (The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks)
- Gerudo Valley (The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time)
- Arena Ferox (Fire Emblem)
- Tortimer Island (Animal Crossing)
- Living Room
- Prism (Pokemon)
- Rainbow Road (Mario Kart)
- Find Mii
- Balloon Fight
- Jungle Japes (Donkey Kong Country)
Wii U version
- Mario Galaxy
- Pyrosphere (Metroid)
- Town and City (Animal Crossing)
- Boxing Ring (Punch-Out!!)
- Pilotwings
- Skyloft (The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword)
- Windy Hill (Sonic the Hedgehog)
- Garden of Hope
- Wii Fit Studio
- Palutena's Temple (Kid Icarus: Uprising)
- Halberd (Kirby's Adventure)
- Wiley Castle (Mega Man 2)
Overall, I'm really impressed with this Direct. I was expecting a bit more, but they brought the hype in my opinion. The only part I'm a bit disappointed by is the fact that the 3DS gets a summer release while the Wii U version won't be until sometime in Winter. However if this means we get the best netcode possible for this game, it'll be well worth the wait...the slow agonizing wait.
If you missed the Direct here it is! In all it's digital glory!
