Ramblings of a Junktown Jerky Vendor

This is just me speaking out loud. Pay no mind.

I really wish I had a Fire Emblem game right now. Or something similar to that y'know? It's weird that I feel like playing random genres of game so obsessively. Sometimes I feel like playing Zelda, sometimes I feel like playing Fighting games, sometimes it's a spectacle fighter like Devil May Cry, right now it's Turn Based Strategy games. I've been playing XCOM quite often this past couple of days, but I sometimes wish it was a little bit more varied of a game. I hope one day some developer out there can see the distinct elements in a game like XCOM and try to put their own spin on it. I hear Banner Saga is pretty good, but I'm pretty worn out on Medieval Fantasy style games. Though Dark Souls has other unique properties that allow me to pay no mind to the more similar feeling, environs, enemies, and set pieces. I think Advance Wars is a TBS game, but it's a handheld franchise. I'm really more of a console kind of guy. I like the big screens and high resolutions. I don't consider handheld games to be unacceptable, hell I play Pokemon every other day, but it's got more to do with preference and the fact that I don't have time to play games on my 3DS while at class. It really just makes the whole portable aspect feel much less alluring in that regard. I hear they're making a Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem crossover, but I'm not really sure if it's gonna be an RPG or TBS game. I'm leaning more to TBS but that's what I'm in the mood for right now honestly.

Titanfall and Dark Souls 2 will be hitting soon. Pretty excited for Dark Souls 2, Titanfall looks cool and all but as far as my expectations go for that game I'm really not expecting anything more than another repetitive FPS that I'll play every time I have nothing else better to do. As is the case for most FPS games. Dark Souls 2 will keep me occupied for a while I'm sure. I'm really feeling like playing 3D World again, cause I mean that game really just impressed me it was so good. I need to get a Link Between Worlds too. Bravely Default looks really neat as well. I played the demo and it seems like they cut all the fat from most JRPGs that made them feel like a chore to play them for me. It's really quick, you can end battles as fast as a single turn. There's not a bazillion different NPCs that you feel obligated to talk to, shops are get in get out type deals, changing your party to accomodate different roles is really cool idea and adds plenty of replay value, it might be one of the first JRPGs since Chrono Trigger that I will genuinely enjoy and have a good time with. Though it seems like the story will be bland and generic. I'd be lying if I said I only play  Chrono Trigger for it's story. Chrono Trigger, Bravely Default, and Super Mario RPG (& Onward) are some of the better RPGs simply because they don't have you pressing A to get through a battle, if you want to get past a series of simple battles you have to strategize your attacks, hell BD actually awards you more bonuses for finishing battles faster. That's good design right there. It keeps the game moving at a real good pace and keeps it from bogging down the experience like so many other RPGs do. I see the precedent that FF6 set for video games and story-telling, but it's really not a well paced or very fun game to me. It just feels slow and annoying having to go to and from the overworld and running into random enemy encounters. SMRPG and CT eliminated the need for random battles by just having a set number of enemies in a given area, so that you can accurately tell like "OK, I only need to kill three enemies and then I can get to the next area." Not "I took a single step after a battle and I'm thrown into another battle, I'm so bored. I'm not even thinking about pressing these inputs." I'm rambling at this point, but I just needed to put some thoughts on paper...or whatever goes for paper on an electronic device in this day in age.
